Corn Mill

Few Words

Where the Kourris river ran through Kato Amianto, there were four water mills. The first one in Kato Amiantos was owned by Charalambos Mylonas, a native of Kato Amiantos whose humour defined an era throughout his lifetime. The second was located close to the chapel of Panagia tou Amiantos, which was owned by Giannis Ttira of Agros. The third was a bit further down, under the ownership of Panagia tou Agros, and the fourth was further down, in the direction of Marathos, and was owned by Antonis X Vasili Tsiantis of Pelendri. These four water mills utilised the energy of water to grind wheat and barley to meet the requirements of the neighbouring villages.

Amiantos Hospital (Sight)

Few Words

The Amiantos mine in Troodos led to the formation of a significant settlement in the region, which primarily consisted of mine workers and their families. Thus, a large number of dwellings, shops, as well as a school and a hospital, arose in the region. In addition to the scars on the mined mountain, the abandoned mine structures reveal the former inhabitants of the area. The historic hospital, a building with characteristic colonial style, appears to be frozen in time. The building that functioned for more than half a century has survived the ravages of time without being fully demolished. Touring its inside provides a glimpse of its former existence, creating the impression that some of the tens of thousands of souls that have gone through it have “haunted” it.

In 1927, the workers of Amiantos successfully reduced their daily labour hours from ten to nine hours. A larger strike occurred in Amiantos in 1929, with the participation of 5,000 to 6,000 workers, who held a demonstration at the company’s offices, demanding a wage increase and the freedom to purchase bread from wherever they wished, as opposed to the company’s ovens, from which it was sold at a high price.
